June Projects

June has been quite the busy month!  (hence...brief hiatus from blogging :))

Here are some of the projects that've been going on around our house that will explain my recent retreat from blog-world.

#1. Hand painted signs to raise money for the AMBER Adoption Fund at Grace Church, Memphis, TN
I was amazed at just how many people have been so supportive in this and ordering signs as gifts or for that special place in their homes.  You choose the style, colors, size, and distressing.  85% of first round goes to the fund to support church members in their adoptions.  The Lord sent us a wonderful babysitter who comes once a week from 9-2 so that this mama can work on them without neglecting my first responsibilities as wife/mother.

Traditional example - calligraphy script

Example board with color and distressing options

Contemporary example - variety of fonts in a Hatch Show Print sorta style

#2. Backyard Bible Clubs with Covenant Baptist Church
I got to do crafts!  For two weeks in June we went to different neighborhoods and set up shop inviting the kids over for 2 hours of Bible lesson, songs, memory verse and prizes, crafts, snack, and games.  It was awesome meeting these kids and spending time with them hearing God's Word.  These pictures are from the first week.  Hubs took a hit for the team eating fast food a lot, but then he got to bond with William keeping him for me while I could go.  Ministry is a great thing, but we have to remind ourselves it's not going to be super easy!

Making cakes and party hats out of felt because God throws a CELEBRATION over sinners who repent #prodigalson

My good friend Rhonda from church

and my new friend Elyse was there with her adorable kids Faith and Simon

Our living room floor Thursday night.  Like I always told my students... ya gotta be willing to make a mess to make a masterpiece.

This craft was for the parable of the wheat thinking about how God will "sort out" those for His kingdom who have been given a new heart.  Kids created a Go Fish game and tried to catch the fish with the good heart and the week's memory verse.
#3. Jack's watercolor
My best friend Steph had her little boy this month, and this was the artwork he got for his room.  It was pretty hilarious brainstorming "boy" images with my husband, who kept saying weapons should be in there.  I did not think those would go well for baby boy's finished piece (lucky for Steph).  Steph actually came up with this adorable concept of the boy doodles in a Shel Silverstein kinda style, which was so fun to work with.

#4. Baking
We have been blessed with lots of family and friends visiting us this month as well.  So some baking was in order.  The fun part is making it pretty.  And licking the icing bowl until you go into sugar coma.

These were made using a large round decorators tip in an icing bag... but you could just take your regular icing, put it into a gallon ziploc, snip the corner of bag with scissors, twist end and squeeze.

Trisha Yearwood's Key Lime Cake.  I subbed 1.5 c applesauce for the oil and it was still delicious.  Cream cheese icing.

most. moist. cake. ever.  Try it!
#5. Yardwork
Our front yard has been needing some love for some time now.  And with summer fast-approaching, we needed to get to it or wait until the fall.  So we borrowed a couple of pick axes and started the road with no return...

We were SO sore the next day...

HEEV...HO!!

His royal adorableness enjoying the scenery and relaxing with his milk after a snack.

Doing hard work is just more fun when you can work with others (aka bribe them with food to help you!!!) :)  Our good friends the Lixeys came over to help shovel out tons of lava rock from the beds.

Eating dinner on the deck

Nicki (due with baby no. 2 next month!) Sawyer and Brian

Sawyer loved to play in daddy's truck while watching the "men" shovel rocks

This took a while

Daddy son shot

Finished product...not too rewarding is it?

We girls stayed inside baking cookies

Yum.

Baileys Come to Visit

Friends who drive long distances to stay with you in a little Army town without a lot of flair and pizazz are, well... treasures.  How do we deserve them?  We just don't.  But we were truly blessed by getting to host our dear friends from Memphis, Ben and Emily.  We were also thrilled to see again their little guy, Abe, who is just four months younger than William.

Words can't really describe the impact those four years in Memphis had on our lives.  And trying to describe the friendships God gave us there is even more daunting...

We all met through Grace Church.  Emily and I were both crazy busy teachers who longed for the day when we could be moms.  Her smile is contagious and hair = envious!  And don't get me started on her eye for design and delish home cookin'.  We also went to Serbia together to visit a couple of our church's missionaries and encourage them.  I was convinced Emily was Mother Teresa incarnate.  Emily was always there to pray for me and make me laugh, and she got her hands into any mission work she could.  Ben was our fun artsy guy friend who grew up in Guatemala and wore cool glasses, cooked amazing chili, loved the Lord and downtown Memphis with his whole heart, and who always came over to our itty bitty apartment for anything random we would do from fish taco nights to pumpkin carving contests.  Then one day, these two got married.  Then nine months later, they had a beautiful baby.  It's a pretty awesome story...

From sharing meals to sharing stories, a visit to downtown and the local Farmer's Market, a double date to Nashville while babysitter keeps the boys, and to church Sunday morning, the weekend was brief but full!

William enjoyed playing with his new buddy.  They learned about sharing (i.e. stealing) and all sorts of things :)

Rockin out

Breakfast

Tomato, spinach and goat cheese omelets with toast and jam, anyone?

Unfortunately the rain kept us from our original plans of outdoor adventures, so Ben looked up some things for us to do in Nashville instead while I read to the boys (heart and arms = full)

Em and I enjoyed putting together some bacon turkey wraps and spinach fruit salad with some blueberry chutney (hungry yet?)  PS-we also discovered a new way to cook bacon using cookie sheet and cooling rack.  This. changes. everything.

Date night at Burger Up on the "swanky" side of Nashville, as we like to say

What those smiles really mean is, "You have sweet potato fries here? Score!"

Matthew tries out Ben's shades tryin to be "swankier"

And no visit is ever complete without some serious memory snappin and a gift of group photos for the fam. Definitely not a professional, but I'm cheap!  It's hard to get a bad photo with such a good looking group of folks.

Neighbors

For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
~Galatians 5:14

With springtime comes more folks outside and thus more opportunities to get to know all the neighbors who have been hibernating through the winter months.  So recently we have tried to take advantage of this and get out of hibernation ourselves.

There's a part of all of us that longs for that sense of real community.  But how do we find it?  Social media helps making connections, but it doesn't completely satisfy.  It requires person to person, a little faith and some serious initial awkwardness...

One of our neighbors, Steve, has been so kind to help us with our lawn mowing issues.  He and Matthew worked on our (el cheapo) mower to fix a part that wasn't working.

We've also gotten to know Barb and Buddy across the street, and William cannot get enough of their puppy.  Buddy mentioned that we could borrow any yard tool we ever need, and Barb said to come over whenever.

We saw some other neighbors outside one afternoon and went to introduce ourselves.  Lynn started cutting her beautiful blooms for us.  Our kitchen/dining room smelled like fresh peonies for a week.

So in conclusion...

A little neighborly-ness may initially feel weird and awkward, but if your experience is like ours you'll probably end up on the receiving end of the reward.  We had nothing to give but a hello, and we got mower fixing, free tool rental, gorgeous spring blooms, and new relationships with people who, on the surface, we have nothing in common!

The next step is having these people over for dinner more often... a grill out on the back deck or just a conversation over chips and dip.  Who knows... maybe community is found with those people you'd least expect!  Maybe it's the person next door!

Wreath party?

I was in charge of May's DENTAC Spouse's get-together.  DENTAC is the name of Matthew's Army unit.  What I didn't realize, though, is that late May is probably the busiest time on everyone's calendars.  Whoops!

We postponed the actual event until post-summer (meaning only three people could come this go around), but COL McMillian's wife Ann and I still got together and had a great time makin some spring wreaths.  Ann's husband is an Army Colonel.

I've really enjoyed getting to meet the ladies through this dental spouse group.  Hopefully we can have a larger wreath-making and desserts shindig come August.

Babies have a sixth sense about grandmothers.  William loved Mrs. Ann.

Toddler Beginnings

Matthew always has a way of saying things to lighten the mood when I'm feeling stressed or upset.

Like last night ... I came in from our church's Backyard Bible Clubs after Matthew had put William down.  Matthew is keeping William from 6-8pm each night this week so that I can go help with crafts.  I come home and, rather than being ecstatic that my husband played with William, fed him dinner, cleaned him up and put him soundly to bed... I am fretting about the few beads remaining that were spilled on the living room floor, the (3 or 4) books still lying on the table, and the trace amounts of dried food still on the floor after he's already sweetly mopped it.  Matthew could have gotten upset and (rightfully) felt unappreciated and nagged.  Instead he just smiled and said, "Um, babe?.. We do have a toddler."

We do have a toddler.  And it's a beautiful, wonderful thing.  So thankful for this man who doesn't deal with my sin as it could be dealt with but loves me (and laughs at me!) through it.  And for a house with the sound of WHOOSSSsshhhHH as our one year old discovers the giant box of beads from the craft box before moving onto other toddler things like diving off the sofa or unfolding the folded laundry.  As William discovers this world around him, I have a feeling I'll be discovering a lot too about dying to my own idols, embracing accidents with grace and love, letting go the fear of him  ever getting hurt, etc etc.

Here are some pictures of this little guy's recent adventures toddling around the house...

"Helping" me sort laundry.  AKA opening drawers and pulling out clothes and sweetly handing them to me.

Reading at his favorite spot - the dishwasher

More helping with laundry

Loves to share his big boy breakfast food (aka giant waffle)

He does this all the time

Fully weaned and guzzling two+ gallons of organic whole milk a week.  Yep.

I tried keeping him off the couches.  It worked for like, an hour.

Loves to play with his toy cars or anything with wheels and carry it with him on his adventures.

Checking out the distance...

Going for it (I grabbed his leg after he dove for the floor)

"What's wrong mama?  Do I make you nervous?"

moving = constant :)

I love when he reads his books upside-down

Other developments

He'll put my cell phone to his ear (more like the back of his head) and start babbling.  Then he offers me the phone.

He knows that if he "accidentally" drops his bear out of his crib, mama will come in and bring it back to him.

In big boy convertible carseat now (it's about time!).

He understands that we pray before each meal and will sometimes bow his head and then raise both hands for "Amen!"

He just got two more teeth on the bottom... so he now has 8 total.

He is cruising and walking with a walker.  But not yet walking unassisted.

He started signing, all of a sudden!  Signs for more, please (occasionally), and milk (except does this for everything except milk).  We are primarily focusing on please and thank you and more.

We've started flashcards and he is always bringing them to me to "play" flashcards with him.

He still loves books, but he quickly wants to get back down to crawl and explore.  He's SO active.

Still taking two two-hour naps a day!  But if he misses a morning nap he'll take a longer afternoon one and be okay.

Favorite things that make him laugh hysterically: being chased, dogs

Says dada, mama, "oo" for woof, and "da-gah" which I think is thank you.

He is still heavily in the separation anxiety phase.  He cries a lot in church nursery, so please pray he will have peace and understanding that mama and daddy are coming back!

Lord of the Harvest

I recently harvested some mint in my backyard.  It was full and beautiful and overflowing.  I had visions of making mint extract and mint chocolate chip ice cream and mint lip balm.  I gathered my gloves and not-so-handy teflon shears and went to work, thinking I'd lop em to death and let them sit out in the scorching sun for an hour or so while I weeded the rest of the massively overgrown forest underneath our deck.   To my dismay, most all of the mint didn't make it.

This is an example of an improper harvesting.   The time was right.  The mint was ripe.  But I lacked the proper tools... in my case being some forethought, perhaps a brain, and some better shears... :)

There is a different harvest I will be referring to in this posting.  A much better one.  And Jesus Himself is the Lord of it.  It's a harvest of His people for His glory forever!  And the tools that He has chosen to properly bring about a harvest are prayer, laborers, and His Word.  God has called Christians to pray earnestly that God would send laborers out into this harvest to gather up people for Himself.  To take the message of the gospel as proclaimed in His Word and share it with others.  And He for those who believe, He promises to be with them always... He is worthy of a bounty for sure.

This past weekend was our church's annual missions conference, in which we learned much about this harvest.  We got to hear from Pastor Bob Selph from Grace Baptist Church in Taylors South Carolina and also from another worker headed to the middle east.

We were excited to be able to host the workers headed to the middle east and get to know them and their children even more personally.  It is truly humbling and inspiring to be able to meet people such as this who are living each day set on the promises of God in His Word and the belief that Jesus Christ is worthy of not only our praise.. but the praise of the nations.

Here are some of the verses and topics that were unwrapped for us over the course of the weekend:

~
Praise the Lord, all nations!  Extol him, all peoples!  For great is his steadfast love toward us, and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever. Praise the Lord! ~Psalm 117:1-2

And when the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord, and as many as were appointed to eternal life believed.  ~Acts 13:48

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age. ~Matthew 28:19-20

 -Biography of missionary Samuel Zwemer

-"Go, send, or disobey..." ~John Piper

And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction.  When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.  Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” ~Matthew 9:35-38

Lord of the Harvest,   Matthew 9:35-38  by a worker in the middle east

Hearing from Matthew 9:35-38 was powerful for us as the text was unpacked piece by piece.  I've summarized it loosely below.  Though I'm definitely short-handing it, this is an example of Expositional Preaching that some of you have heard Matthew and I talk about.  The weekend was so encouraging for us that I just needed to sit down today and go through it all again... so here ya go!

Q: What is the content of this passage and how it relates to what we pray?
1. "Therefore...pray" -  Not go first... pray first.   Apart from the work of the Holy Spirit through our actions, our actions are meaningless.
2. "...pray earnestly to the Lord of the Harvest.." -  Picture a farmer preparing his fields.  The Lord is the farmer and one day there will be a harvest, and those who are trusting in His blood to cover their sins will be saved and spend eternity with Jesus.
Luke 3:17 His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.
3. "...to send out laborers..." - God does the calling and the sending.  It would be unwise for you to just up and go without being sent by God.  Pray for the harvest, and pray that God would raise up laborers.  And if He is calling you specifically to go, go :).  Also, God is calling for both quality and quantity of laborers.  Quality in that a farmer would go and get the people who he has prepared to harvest his crops.  Quantity in the words from the portion of the verse that says, "harvest is plentiful and workers are few."

Q: How should that affect the manner in which we pray?
~Pray with knowledge, compassion, persevering urgency, and faith~
Pray with Knowledge
1. "When He saw the crowds..." - Jesus already had compassion for people as seen in all of scripture.  But there is a sense here in which we have the example of needing to see the pain and need for God that people have all around us.  He gave the example of taking the bus around town rather than your car.  You might then see people you wouldn't have seen otherwise.  How can we have compassion if we don't even know what's around us?
Pray with Compassion
2. "...because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd." - Jesus was grieved by their physical needs but more-so by their spiritual condition.  We were encouraged to get past, for example, the superficial facade of a neighbor and see people who are distressed and dispirited and without a shepherd.
Pray with Persevering Urgency
3. Go back to farmer analogy.  Without persevering, it won't last.  Plants must be harvested when ready..there is an urgency there.
Pray with Faith
4. God exists!  And He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.
And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him. ~Hebrews 11:6

Application
. If you don't yet know Christ, His offer is for you.  In order to be one of his sheep, you must believe the true gospel of Jesus Christ:

Jesus is God.  He came from heaven to earth to live a perfect live because it pleased the Father and because we could not live that perfect life.  His death was the punishment our sin deserved, so he 'paid our debt'... we can now have access to Jesus now and in eternity by believing in His shed blood on that cross and His resurrection from the dead...something only Jesus could do for us as sinners.    Because Jesus is Holy, or, 'set apart' from us, we cannot have access to him if we come in our sin.  We must be cleansed with the cleansing blood of Christ.  We must come to him with, "Nothing in my hand I bring... simply to thy Cross I cling..."  By believing in this gospel that Christ died to save sinners, we can have his Holy Spirit inside of us.  He promises to give us His Holy Spirit along with a new heart that has new affections.  It is by God's grace that you are saved through faith.  And good works will then be the outward result of an inward change... they will not merit it.
For by grace you have been saved through faith.  And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. ~Ephesians 2:8
As a believer, God will 'sanctify' or transform you more into His likeness through prayer and the reading of His Word, which is living and active and infused with his Holy Spirit.
. Pray for the nations to trust in Christ alone for eternal redemption.  Pray that the Lord would raise up laborers, and that we would be faithful to either GO or SEND... but not choose neither. Pray for the missionaries and sending churches.
. Listen to local and international news
. Take the bus!
. Have a world map or globe in your home
. Own the book Operation World, read it with family
. Consider adoptions or foster care or supporting the adoption of children into homes that will share with them this gospel
. etc.

Come, My Soul, Thy Suit Prepare
Portion of hymn by John Newton..."suit" meaning lawsuit or argument

Come, my soul, thy suit prepare:
Jesus loves to answer prayer;
He Himself has bid thee pray,
Therefore will not say thee nay;

Thou art coming to a King,
Large petitions with thee bring;
For His grace and power are such,
None can ever ask too much.

Mixed bag

William is .. wait for it .. WEANED!

Yes!  We did it!  He has gone multiple days now without any breastmilk and as a result he has increased his intake of organic whole milk.

My body is free.

I feel kinda like this...

and this...

...It's a mixed bag.
